Following an astonishing dispute with US President Donald Trump in the Oval Office that left Western allies reeling and cast doubt on the future of the Russia-Ukraine war, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will meet European leaders at a crucial meeting in London on Sunday.
In stark contrast to his reaction at the White House, Zelensky received a warm welcome from British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Saturday. The Ukrainian leader added that King Charles has agreed to meet with Zelensky on Sunday.
However, a pivotal day of diplomacy is approaching in between politeness. An acceptable peace agreement that seemed to be gradually developing this week but abruptly collapsed on Friday is something Sunday’s summit would rekindle the West hopes. Starmer told the BBC on Sunday morning that he will offer a plan to end the war to the United States after working with France, Ukraine, and “possibly one or two others.”
That approach implies a tacit recognition that getting Trump and Zelensky to sit down to negotiations will be difficult and is set to compete with the negotiation process that Trump’s administration initiated with Russia last month.
